#GoodNews: Heart Surgeon Saves Life Of Marathon Runner In Cardiac Arrest

Just two miles from the finish line of the 39th Long Beach Half Marathon in California a couple of weeks ago, Tuan Pham, an avid runner, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and collapsed. Fortunately, Dr. Ryan Chiu, a cardiothoracic surgeon at Long Beach Memorial, happened to be nearby and witnessed the emergency.

Without hesitation, Chiu started CPR and called Long Beach Memorial to tell them to prepare a team to perform emergency surgery. At the hospital, doctors discovered that despite his active lifestyle, Pham had significant coronary artery disease and Dr. Chiu performed a triple bypass surgery, ultimately saving his life.

Pham is thankful to be alive and grateful to Chiu for saving him. He says that he usually runs alone, so it’s an amazing coincidence that he happened to be right next to a cardiac surgeon when he suffered his heart attack. Even though both his parents died from heart disease, he thought his healthy lifestyle would protect him, but now he’s hoping his story will inspire others to get a check-up with a doctor. Thanks to Dr. Chui, Pham is on the road to recovery, and he’s already making plans to return to the race next year.
