In October, burglars broke into the home of Karen Pollard and Rick Gott, beloved teachers at Natomas Charter School's Performing and Fine Arts Academy in Sacramento, California.
The thieves ransacked their home and made off with about $25,000 of the couple’s property, including their clothes, jewelry, electronics, and irreplaceable sentimental items like Pollard's grandmother's antique teacup collection.
Now the Natomas Charter School community has rallied to support the dedicated teachers. Colleague and friend Sarah Winter started a crowdfunding campaign to help the couple out and it’s already raised more than $9,000, with contributions coming in from former students, parents, and co-workers.
The loss and hardship have been tough on the couple, but they’ve been blown away by the community’s response and have expressed their deep gratitude for the unexpected support. “The community here reached out and lifted us in a way that I didn’t expect,” Pollard says, “I had no idea it was even possible.”
