A dramatic rescue unfolded recently in Duluth, Minnesota, when firefighters braved the frigid, 8-foot waves of Lake Superior to save a dog. One evening last week, a dog broke free from its leash and jumped into the water near the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge. Responding to the call for help, the Duluth Fire Department deployed a crew in ice rescue suits.
During the tense rescue effort, emergency workers, being directed from the bridge above, fought against the powerful icy waves to keep the large dog’s head above water. The rescuers were having a hard time securing the dog and along with the pup they ended up being swept under the bridge toward the bay. Fortunately, an inflatable rescue boat, Marine-3, arrived just in time to pull everyone to safety.
Although the pup was exhausted, he quickly recovered and was reunited with his grateful owner. The firefighters were happy to have been able to save the dog and took the moment to remind the public that it’s better to call them than for an untrained individual to attempt a rescue, a situation that could very easily turn tragic.
