While on a walk with his wife, Cory Patterson, an off-duty Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy witnessed a vehicle crash into a fence. He immediately approached the car, broke the passenger window to unlock it, and began administering emergency aid. After checking for the driver's pulse, finding none, and observing that the man's face was turning purple, Patterson started CPR.
While he concentrated on reviving the driver, his wife managed the scene. The deputy had just re-certified in CPR, first aid, and AED use two weeks earlier, leading to his confident and effective response to the incident. "I was just doing, you know, what I’m trained to do: just acting in a crisis," Patterson says.
The driver, who’d reportedly lost consciousness due to a seizure, is expected to make a full recovery. Patterson's timely intervention and skilled use of his EMS training were pivotal in saving the driver's life.
