Emergency crews in Johnson County, Iowa, are getting creative to keep up with rescue efforts following some particularly severe winter weather: teaming up with local snowmobile clubs. The state has experienced more snow than usual lately, creating dangerous travel conditions on its roads. As a result, road crews and first responders have been struggling to keep up with snow removal and rescue operations.
In an innovative move, the Johnson County Emergency Management Agency enlisted the help of the Johnson Co. Snowdrifters Snowmobile Club. The club's president, Chuck Kikuts, says that they’ve responded to several calls over the past week to assist stranded motorists. He also says that Iowans’ strong sense of community means that residents come together to help each other in times of need.
This isn’t the first time members of the Snowdrifters club have helped out when in such situations. In previous years, they’ve come to the aid of stranded drivers by providing essential supplies and, in some cases, even transporting people to safety.
