The estate of George Carlin is suing over the release of an AI-generated comedy special that uses the comedian’s mannerisms and voice.
The lawsuit filed yesterday accuses Will Sasso and Chad Kultgen of using Carlin’s entire body of work to train an AI chatbot that wrote the episode’s script, and it might be hard to come up with a defense for those claims.
At the start of the video, it’s explained that the AI program ingested five decades of Carlin’s original standup routines, but no one acquired the rights to use his material.
Carlin’s estate also claims violation of the right of publicity laws, and Kelly Carlin, daughter of George, said in an interview with “The Hollywood Reporter” “We have to draw a line in the sand. This is going to be a fight on every front, with entertainment at the center.”
