Woman Turns Finding Produce For Her Pig To A Food Pantry

An Austin, Texas woman who started collecting produce to feed her pig ended up contributing to the community good. Carol Rabun got a micro pig, Pumbaa, that turned out to be 250 and far from micro. The pig started eating so much that Rabun couldn’t afford it. That’s when she went to the grocery store Fresh Plus and they offered up their garbage bag of trimmings.

There was good and bad stuff in there, so Carol started digging and was surprised at how much usable produce was in the bag. She says “I get this trash bag full of trimmings, brought it home went through all the good, bad and ugly stuff that was in there. Found some really good stuff and said ‘Wow, there’s so much of this I could share it with other people.” So Rabun did.

At first the 78-year-old posted on social media and folks started coming over for the produce. That snowballed into her food pantry that helps supply people who need it with healthy food. Now Rabun’s Carol’s Kindness Food Pantry gets usable food from restaurants, grocery stores, and more businesses. Most of the people who receive the food are either homeless or have a place to live but are unemployed. The pantry serves the greater Austin area now.
