Baby Breathes On Her Own For 1st Time After Rare Double Lung Transplant

When Kylie Overfield was born last fall, she was immediately placed on a ventilator and doctors weren’t sure if she would live a week due to a life-threatening lung disorder. But she defied the odds and in January she was transferred from a Virginia hospital to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, which is known for its expertise in pediatric lung transplants.

Last month, at just five months old, Kylie underwent a rare double lung transplant, as well as having a hole in her heart repaired in an 11-hour operation. The surgery involved more than a dozen doctors and nurses and was a success, allowing Kylie to breathe independently for the first time in her life.

Kylie's mother, Ashley Overfield, who relocated to Houston with her family to support her baby during her recovery, expressed immense gratitude towards the donor baby's family for their life-saving decision. After spending her entire life in hospitals, Kylie is expected to be discharged soon, with a new chance at living a normal life.
