Randall D’Addezio was driving on Interstate 41 in Wisconsin on Wednesday when he witnessed a fiery crash involving two semi-trucks. They were heading in the opposite direction near a construction zone, but as a fellow trucker, he immediately jumped into action to help because he felt there was no time to wait for first responders.
The good Samaritan grabbed his fire extinguisher, crossed the median and when he saw that one of the drivers was still in her cab with flames around it, he rushed to help her. She was trapped and D’Addezio was standing in knee-high mud, oil, and diesel fuel, but he worked to free the woman who was trapped behind the wheel. He says his body just started moving on its own as he tried to reassure the driver that he was there to help and that she’d be okay.
As the dad of a four-year-old with leukemia and a baby on the way, D’Addezio says it’s everyone’s responsibility to look out for each other and he says he hopes someone would save his loved ones in a situation like this. When the woman he rescued tearfully asked why he would risk his life to save hers, he said that’s just what he does.
