High school senior Victoria Taton was recently out running errands in downtown Raleigh when she spotted a young man by the side of the road, lying unresponsive on the ground. She parked her car to see if she could help and learned from the man’s friend that he was possibly experiencing an overdose.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, Taton quickly retrieved a Narcan kit from her car and administered the life-saving drug. The Narcan worked and in less than a minute, the man started to come to and vomited. The teen was on the phone with EMS when he regained consciousness. Her timely intervention ended up being crucial, as medical responders later said that the young man might not have survived without the immediate use of Narcan.
Taton has been carrying Narcan in her car for two years, believing it was a good idea in case she came across just such a scenario. She’s now hoping that her story will inspire others to carry Narcan kits, saying that doing so could save a life.
