Bottles Of Dried Fruit From American Revolution Discovered At Estate Sale

This is berry odd…During renovations at George Washington's iconic Mount Vernon estate, archaeologists made a crazy discovery - dozens of 18th century glass bottles filled with perfectly preserved fruit in the mansion's cellar.

What’s more, they appear to have been untouched for over 250 years since the American Revolution, between 1758 and 1776 to refrigerate fruit.

This find of 35 bottles contains cherries, gooseberries and currants, are likely the product of enslaved workers who prepared and stored the fruit for Washington's household. The unearthing coincides with Mount Vernon's $40-million revitalization ahead of America's semiquincentennial.
