Last week, 75-year-old Michael Altmaier of New Sharon, Maine, went missing after leaving for a meeting in a nearby town. His car was found four days later at the Mount Blue State Park scenic overlook outside the town of Weld. The next morning, the Maine Warden Service began searching for Altmaier.
At around 3:45 that afternoon, Game Warden Kayle Hamilton and K-9 Ash found Altmaier about three-quarters of a mile from where his car was located. Officials believe the septuagenarian may have fallen down the embankment, causing him to become disoriented. Game wardens, search volunteers, and a paramedic provided initial first aid before a Maine Forest Service helicopter took him to a waiting ambulance.
Altmaier was taken to a local hospital, where he stayed overnight. Despite spending four days in the bog, emergency rescue workers say he was in surprisingly good condition. In a post to social media, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife shared details of the successful rescue. Commenters, many of whom were former students of Almaier, praised the rescuers and thanked them for saving the beloved community member.
