Michigan Teen Helps Save Man Dead For 14 Minutes At Car Wash

A Michigan teen is being honored for his part in saving a man’s life. On July 13th, Clinton Township teen Richard Blackwell and his cousin Lemar noticed 55-year-old Ed Fortuna lying on the ground at a local car wash. Fortuna was unconscious and bleeding from his head, so Blackwell quickly got help from nearby police Sergeant Paul Collins. The teen’s quick thinking was crucial, as Collins may not have seen Fortuna otherwise.

At a press conference at the Clinton Township Police Department, Fortuna expressed his gratitude to Blackwell, saying he was clinically dead for 14 minutes before being revived. Collins acknowledged the teen’s decisive actions, saying that without him, they wouldn’t celebrate Fortuna's second chance at life. The sergeant performed CPR on Fortuna, reviving him after a minute of chest compressions, with the fire department arriving soon after to transport him to the hospital.

During a ceremony honoring Blackwell, Fortuna praised him as his "young superhero" for refusing to give up and helping to save his life. He’s since fully recovered, thanks to the quick actions and teamwork of Blackwell, his cousin, and Sergeant Collins.
