Man Hacked His Government Records To Fake His Death To Avoid Child Support

Ever dreamed of faking your death and disappearing?

A Kentucky man decided it was time to do exactly that, but he picked a unique way to try it that wound up getting him a prison sentence.

Jesse Kipf was facing a build-up of child support payments, so in January 2023 he hacked into Hawaii’s death registry using the login credentials of a doctor living in another state, created a case for his death, and completed a worksheet for a Hawaii death certificate.

It worked. Kipf was registered as a deceased person in several government databases.

He was still caught, and this week he was sentenced to nine years in prison and ordered to pay over $195,000 in restitution for damage to computer systems plus the child support he was trying to avoid.
