Girl Saves Herself, 4 Dogs From Fire While Getting Ready For School

On Monday morning, a 12-year-old girl in Cape Coral, Florida, acted quickly to rescue her four dogs from a fire that broke out in her home while she was getting ready for school. After smelling smoke, she called 911 and managed to get the dogs to safety before firefighters arrived and contained the blaze to the garage.

The girl's mother, who was at work at the time, was in contact with her daughter through a security camera throughout the ordeal and helped to guide the tween out of the house. Although the girl was taken to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation, she was later cleared and is expected to be fine. The fire department confirmed that the fire started from a TV in the garage that was plugged into an extension cord.

While the family tragically lost all their belongings to smoke and water damage, the girl's grandmother expressed deep gratitude that both the girl and the dogs were unharmed. In the wake of the fire, the Cape Coral Fire Department is taking the opportunity to remind the public of the importance of plugging appliances and major electronics directly into wall outlets or surge protectors to prevent accidental fires.
