Crossing Guard Gives Away Ice Cream To Cool Kids Off On Way Home

A Glendale Heights, Illinois, crossing guard, 87-year-old Beverly Pappas, has been making a positive impact on the children she watches over daily. During an ongoing heatwave, with temperatures nearing triple digits, she decided to hand out ice cream bars to the kids on their way home from school, helping them cool off in the intense heat and securing her status as the greatest crossing guard ever.

Pappas, who’s served as a crossing guard in the community for years, sees her role as more than just making sure the children are safe. She believes it’s an opportunity to teach them important values like kindness and compassion. "You start out with children,” she says, “Show them how to be good to one another."

For Pappas, the most significant reward comes from knowing that her actions could inspire the children to carry forward that same spirit of generosity and care in their own lives. Her simple yet heartfelt gesture of handing out ice cream during the heatwave is just one example of how she strives to make a difference in her community.
