After a three-day trial in Somerset County, Maine, a 31-year-old man was convicted of assaulting a 14-month-old child. Following his conviction, instead of allowing authorities to escort him to jail, the man fled the courthouse in handcuffs. Surveillance footage captured his escape attempt as he ran through the courthouse and out the door, with two plainclothes officers in pursuit.
Once outside, the man ran across the street before tripping and falling. As he hit the ground, two bystanders quickly intervened and recaptured him. It was later revealed that these bystanders were actually jurors, though it’s not clear whether they were involved in the man’s case or another trial.
The man, who’d been out on bail before his conviction, was promptly taken back into custody and booked into jail. He’s now awaiting sentencing for the assault and may also face new charges related to the escape attempt.
