A girl in Wisconsin may have just won the “Sister of the Year” award for saving her siblings from a house fire. Trinity Kornas was at home alone with her seven siblings before school last Wednesday morning when she smelled and saw smoke. Fortunately, the 11-year-old didn’t panic, instead rushing into action to get everyone outside.
While their mom was at a doctor’s appointment with another sibling, Trinity spotted smoke coming from under a door upstairs in their Racine home. She was able to get all of her brothers and sisters, who range in age from 14 years to six months, and their dog out of the house safely and she says she knew exactly what to do because her family practiced it as part of a safety plan.
“She head-counted everybody as I’m on the phone with her and my heart is just racing,” Kristina Kornas, Trinity’s mother, said. “I’m like, ‘How fast can I get home?’ Those are my babies.” Fortunately, the fire was contained to one area because the door was closed, so the damage is mostly on the second floor. Kristina encourages everyone to teach their kids fire safety so they would know what to do in an emergency, just like her daughter did.
A GoFundMe has been started to help the family get back on their feet.
