A Canadian community got the news everyone was hoping for when a missing girl was found safe after three stressful days of searching. Last Thursday evening, Oaklynn Schweder, a six-year-old who has autism and is non-verbal, disappeared from her house in northern British Columbia. Volunteers and multiple organizations joined forces for the search, using helicopters, police service dogs, and Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems to look for Oaklynn.
They weren’t successful until Sunday night when she was finally located in a forested area not far from her home. Everyone was relieved, especially Oaklynn’s mom, Gail Skin. A video shared on social media shows her rushing into the woods and coming out moments later with her daughter wrapped in her arms. As they emerge, dozens of searchers greet them with applause, cheers, and hugs.
Oaklynn was checked out by paramedics and despite her multi-day ordeal in the wilderness alone, she’s fine. Gail shared an update, thanking everyone who helped get her daughter back home, and says her “heart is so happy it could burst.” Oaklynn turns seven on Monday and her mom says she’ll “be having the biggest birthday party” to celebrate.
