#GoodNews: Woman Becomes Kidney Donor For Stranger She Met Hiking

After seeing a Facebook post about a father in need of a kidney transplant, Krissy Miller felt like she wanted to help. So in October 2022, she started the screening process to become a living organ donor but found out she didn’t meet the criteria and had to lower her blood sugar and lose weight first. That motivated the Utah mom of four to start exercising more and she began hiking Y Mountain outside of Provo three times a week.

Over the next year, Miller thought about being an organ donor, and one day during her hike, she met a stranger and it all clicked. She struck up a conversation with a couple who were also hiking and had recently moved to Utah from Florida. Miller asked what they liked about her state and Shiller Joseph told her it moved him up on the transplant list. He revealed that he has lupus, which has damaged his kidneys and he was on dialysis three times a week.

During this chance encounter, Miller discovered they share the same blood type and offered to be his donor if they were a match. A series of tests proved she was and they had a successful kidney transplant in April. "I don't believe it was a coincidence that we met that day,” Miller says. “That was the one and only time Schiller had ever been on Y Mountain.”
