A birthday trip to New Orleans got off to a rocky start for two Southern California women when they were removed from a Spirit Airlines flight. Tara Kehidi and Teresa Araujo were flying out from Los Angeles to the Big Easy to celebrate Teresa’s 30th birthday, but they didn’t travel there on that flight. Instead, they got dress coded and kicked off.
The women were both wearing sweaters when they boarded, but they took them off because it was hot from the plane not having air conditioning before take off. They had crop tops on underneath, which Tara says left “just a little bit of stomach showing.” The friends say a male flight attendant told them to “put something on” but they pushed back and asked to see a dress code policy stating they can’t wear crop tops on the plane.
According to Spirit Airlines, all guests agree to something called the Contract of Carriage when they make a reservation, which includes “certain clothing standards for all guests traveling with us.” While this doesn’t explicitly ban crop tops or detail what is considered inappropriate, it says the airline can deny boarding or require a guest to leave if they’re “barefoot or inadequately clothed or (if their) clothing is lewd, obscene, or offensive in nature.” The women say they felt “kind of embarrassed” because they were “being treated like criminals,” but they did make it to New Orleans after being booted and spending $1,000 on a Delta flight.
