Before Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida last week, the east coast of the state was hit with a series of tornadoes. Michelle Westfield came face-to-face with one as she was driving down a road in St. Lucie County and saw the twister form right before her eyes. She knew she’d never escape it going forward, so she slammed the car into reverse and sped backward as fast as she could.

But it’s what she did while she reversed down Winter Garden Parkway, a residential road, that helped save strangers. The entire time, Westfield was screaming and honking her horn to warn others about the approaching tornado. Brandi Clarke heard “Get in your house!” being yelled and realized the danger of the situation, so she grabbed her husband and kids, managing to get everyone inside safely in the nick of time.

The tornado passed over them right afterward, shaking the house forcefully, but the family was okay, thanks to Westfield. Grateful for her “hero,” Clarke posted about it on Facebook in an attempt to find her. It worked, Westfield found her and the women met in person so she could thank her for saving her family’s lives. The tornado killed at least six people in the area, so it was well-deserved thanks. The women shared a hug and plan to stay friends, and they’ve already made plans to go camping together.
