Flagler County Sheriff’s Sergeant Paul DeSousa recently helped save a young boy’s life while vacationing at Dollywood with his family. According to a social media post by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, DeSousa heard cries for help and discovered a park employee attempting the Heimlich maneuver on a boy who’d stopped breathing and was turning blue.
Unable to see an obstruction in the boy’s mouth or throat, the sergeant quickly began performing CPR. Soon after, a paramedic who was also visiting the park with his family arrived to assist. Working together, they managed to get the boy breathing again, and his color started to return.
The pair stayed with the boy until paramedics arrived on the scene. The sheriff’s office praised DeSousa for his lifesaving actions, noting that first responders are “never truly off duty,” even while out of uniform and on vacation.
