Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan fought back tears while speaking out at the Skating Club of Boston about the tragic loss of its members of the figure skating community in a devastating plane crash. “Not sure how to process it,” she said at a press conference, adding, “which is why I’m here.”

The crash, which involved American Airlines flight 5342 and a military helicopter over Washington, D.C., claimed the lives of skaters Spencer Lane and Jinna Han, their mothers Christine Lane and Jin Han, and coaches Vadim Naumov and Evgenia Shishkova, who were previously Olympic champions for Russia. The club alum emphasized how deeply this loss is felt across the skating world, saying, “Every rink that has skating has feelings towards this. It’s tragic.”

She also reflected on the resilience skaters develop through their training, sharing, “You get back up. Keep on trying. And even when it’s hard, you get back up.” With the community reeling from this unimaginable loss, Kerrigan encouraged everyone to lean on each other, saying it's “not easy, but that’s what we all have to do now together.”
