A week-long search for a missing golden retriever named Freddy ended in a heartwarming rescue in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Hiker Collin Leiby was trekking Sharp Mountain when his dog, Bass, led him off the trail, where he spotted Freddy trapped in a deep coal pit. The six-month-old pup, too exhausted to climb out, responded to Leiby’s calls, and with a little help, was safely pulled from the pit before being led down the mountain.
Freddy had gone missing more than a week prior, leading his owners, Pam and Joe Palko, to mobilize their community with flyers, online posts, and even seeking help from professionals. As temperatures dipped below freezing, they began to lose hope, but they never stopped looking. Then, early last week, Freddy was spotted near the home of retired veterinarian Dr. Carolyn Canizaro-Orlowsky, who quickly alerted the Palkos.
Freddy’s return was celebrated by the community and was especially significant for the Palkos, who recently lost another dog to cancer. Although he lost about 10 pounds, Freddy is now safely home, reunited with his best friend, two-year-old golden retriever Harper.
