On Valentine’s Day, Arkansas State University student Mary Mashburn called an Uber to take her to the hospital after feeling unwell, not knowing that she was about to experience a life-threatening emergency. Halfway to the hospital, Mashburn’s breathing became labored and then stopped entirely. Driver Shauntez Allen knew something was wrong the moment she picked Mashburn up and when she realized the passenger was slipping into anaphylactic shock, she called ahead to the hospital and rushed to get her there in time.
Upon arrival, Allen ran inside for help, making sure that her passenger received the urgent medical care she desperately needed. Mashburn was placed on a ventilator for several days and Allen continued to check in on her recovery. When she eventually regained consciousness, she immediately recognized Allen, reaching out to thank the driver for saving her life.
Now back home with her family, Mashburn has stayed in contact with Allen, grateful for the quick-thinking stranger who stepped in when she needed help most. Reflecting on the experience, she says that she believes no other situation would have kept her alive, calling Allen’s actions nothing short of lifesaving.
