On Wednesday, Jackie Dennis, a special education teacher at Huron High School in Michigan, worked with a group of students to make blankets for families of organ donors as a way to show appreciation and offer comfort. After giving birth in 2020, Dennis faced a severe health crisis that led to her receiving a double lung transplant. She later developed a close relationship with her donor’s family, sharing updates about her life and students to show the impact of their loved one's gift.

Dennis acknowledged the profound loss that comes with organ donation and wanted to give back by creating comfort blankets. She believes it’s important for donor families to understand the deep gratitude recipients feel, even if they never meet. The project brought several students together, with one of the organizers, Riley Lambert, saying she appreciated how many classmates participated.

Grateful for the second chance she was given, Dennis teaches and advocates for organ donation awareness. She hopes her story inspires others and reminds donor families that their loved ones’ generosity changes lives. She considers herself fortunate to have a bond with her donor’s family but says families who don’t have that relationship should know that their kindness leaves a lasting impact.
