Last Thursday, a Sheriff’s Deputy in Lucas County, Ohio, helped prevent a tragedy during a high-speed chase involving a 20-year-old woman in distress. The chase began after the woman’s mother reported that her daughter had fled in a car and intended to harm herself. Deputy Saleh Eidi spotted the vehicle and pursued it as the woman continued speeding and ignoring attempts to stop her.

After failing to stop the vehicle using tire-deflating stop sticks, Eidi repeatedly called the woman’s phone until she finally answered. During their conversation, he tried to calmly reassure her that she wasn’t in trouble and urged her to pull over. She told him that she had a knife in the car, but the kind deputy continued speaking with her, eventually convincing her to safely pull over.

Once off the road, the deputy made sure the woman was comfortable and received the help she needed. She was taken for psychological evaluation, and fortunately, no one was harmed during the incident. Eidi later stressed the importance of using compassion in de-escalating situations like this one, and he also praised the teamwork that led to the peaceful resolution.
