Chapell Roan has opened up about how backlash from her fans has occasionally taken a toll on her.
The pop star has been outspoken about several issues, ranging from how fans treat her to healthcare for artists.
Speaking with SZA for “Interview Magazine,” the pop star shared that she didn’t care about backlash when it was about her art, but it did hurt when “people started hating me for me.”
Roan went on to share that she didn’t realize she cared so much.
“When it comes to me and my personality, it’s like…Am I…insufferable?” she asks.
She adds, “It makes me cry. I don’t know if it will ever feel okay to hear someone say something really hateful about me.”
SZA offered her support in the interview, saying she also feels hurt when she reads tough criticism about herself, noting that even though we can all put on a tough exterior, maybe everyone cares.
“I tried to tell myself that I didn’t care what people were saying about me, but it was so weird that I was being misperceived so far from who I am,” SZA shares.
