Chaos unfolded this past Friday when a car crashed into a daycare center near Yukon, Oklahoma, starting a fire and forcing an evacuation. Fortunately, all 33 children and five staff members were safely evacuated before fire crews from Oklahoma City and Yukon arrived on the scene. Parents credited the daycare staff with acting quickly during the emergency.
Parent Jordann Williams says she saw the building engulfed in flames as she arrived and feared for her child’s safety. Another parent, Blaine Shallenberger, arrived to find children already outside, with teachers handing children over to their parents. She says she’s grateful for the staff’s training and describes the outcome as a miracle.
La Petite Academy says it's working on next steps to support families and staff while determining future care plans. The company is providing childcare at other locations in the area and other local centers have also offered assistance.
