It’s been 13 years since Hurricane Katrina forced John F. Kennedy High School at Lake Area in New Orleans to close. The powerful storm devastated the building and the school has remained closed until now, but it’s just reopened for the 2018-2019 school year.
To celebrate the reopening, JFK alumni hosted a school supply giveaway for current students. The former students want to give back to the new ones, while reminding them of the school’s legacy. In addition to free backpacks stuffed with supplies, the teens were also treated to haircuts, food, and musical performances to kick off the school year.
"We feel like if we can show a kid how to come to school well-groomed with the proper equipment and supplies they need to succeed, then half of the battle is won," explains alumnus Kevin Williams.
