When Linda Hughes decided to become a living kidney donor, she didn’t just help one person. The New Jersey woman decided to start an organ donor chain and ended up saving seven lives by donating her kidney.
So what is a organ donor chain? “It’s when someone needs a transplant and they have a family member or friend who’s willing to donate to them but they’re not a good match,” Hughes explains. “They say I’ll donate my kidney to someone else in order for my loved one to get a kidney."
She wasn’t worried about the health risks to her life, since people can live just fine with only one kidney. “It’s not something that’s changed my life, but I know what I did changed other people’s lives,” Hughes says. “That’s pretty powerful.”
