An Iowa woman who hit it big in the Powerball Lottery jackpot is giving half a million dollars to a veterans group. Lerynne West announced on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” that she gave $500,000 to the Travis Mills Foundation, a Maine-based organization with programs for disabled vets.
Before she shared the news of her donation, West told Ellen about buying her winning ticket at a convenience store in the small Iowa town of Redfield. She admitted she left the ticket on the floor of her sister’s truck before realizing it was a winner.
West has promised to use her lottery money to help others and she’s off to a good start. She says it’s important “that we never forget the sacrifices our soldiers and families make for our country.”
