The Cincinnati Bengals announced Andy Dalton suffered a season-ending thumb injury on Sunday and that he is being placed on IR, ending his season.
In his stead, the team claimed Tom Savage off waivers after the San Francisco 49ers waived him over the weekend.
The 6-foot-4 Savage has bounced all around the league of late. He entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2014 where he played until joining the New Orleans Saints this past offseason. He was waived by the Saints on final cuts, then signed on October 16 by the San Francisco 49ers who waived him on Saturday.
Now he heads into a backup job behind the new starter Jeff Driskel who has shown plenty of promise in his limited regular-season playing time.
This will be his first NFL start and—hopefully for Bengals fans—the first of many as they seemingly have had enough of the Dalton who has as many playoff wins as Driskel and Savage combined.
