Muslim Youth Groups Are Cleaning National Parks During Gov’t Shutdown

We’re weeks into the partial government shutdown now and the National Parks are suffering from huge trash and waste problems because no staff is around to clean up. But some folks are taking the job on themselves, like the Muslim youth groups who are organizing clean up efforts at National Parks and other significant government properties across the U.S.

Dozens of groups from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association met up at Everglades National Park in Florida; Joshua Tree in California; Cuyahoga Valley in Ohio, as well as Independence Hall in Philadelphia and the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to clean up. They collected litter, swept grounds, emptied trash cans and whatever else needed to be done.

“Service to our nation and cleanliness are important parts of Islam,” explains Dr. Madeel Abdullah, the group’s national president. “We could not sit idly by as our national parks collected trash. We will lead by example and dispose of this garbage appropriately and invite all Americans to join us in these parks and others across the nation.”
