American couple Michael and Ami Kowalski went to Ukraine to get their baby, Charlotte, who was born via surrogate the same day Russian troops invaded the country.

The new family started their escape from Ukraine when Charlotte was only a few hours old and also carried a four-day-old girl born via surrogate for another American couple who couldn’t get into Ukraine.

The couple wouldn’t have been able to make it safely out of the country and back to the U.S. if not for the kindness of Ukrainians who helped them on their journey.
