A 10-Year-Old Girl Saves Grandpa From Drowning In Pool

Ten-year-old Aurora Waanounou is being hailed a hero for rescuing her grandfather from a near-drowning incident on St Simons Island in Georgia. On June 2nd, Aurora saw her grandfather fall into the pool at their apartment complex and, with little regard for her own safety, acted quickly to help rescue him.

According to the Glynn County Police Department (GCPD), Aurora’s grandpa was "face down in the water" and couldn't "get his head above water to breathe." Knowing her grandmother couldn’t swim, the girl took the lead, pushing her grandfather to the pool's edge. From there, both she and her grandmother were able to flip him over, keeping his head above water. Then the pre-teen called 911.

In a post to social media, the GCPD praised the 10-year-old, writing, "Without Aurora’s heroic, fearless, and decisive actions under extremely stressful circumstances, it’s possible that the outcome would have been different." Her grandfather, who has since been released from the hospital, was present at a ceremony a few days after the incident honoring Aurora's bravery where GCPD Interim Chief O’Neal Jackson III presented her with the Citizen’s Valor Award.
