#GoodNews: ‘Officer of the Year’ Donates Kidney To Coworker

Detective Rich Wable from Lower Paxton Township Police Department received the "Officer of the Year" award this week for an unbelievably selfless act of kindness. Now he’s sharing the story behind the award, believing that it shows anyone can be a hero.

Last year, Grant Garland, a mechanic for the department, was suffering from kidney failure and it got so bad that he had to undergo daily dialysis. Out of desperation, Garland posted on social media about needing a kidney and Detective Wable responded without hesitation. Despite initial pushback from his wife, he went through rigorous testing, found he was a match, and received approval for transplant surgery. The transplant took place late last year at UPMC Harrisburg Hospital, and both men have recovered well.

Wable and Garland, who were basically strangers before the surgery, have now formed an unbreakable bond and consider each other like family. Garland is back on the job and grateful for the chance to spend time with his family. Wable's actions have inspired others, showing that kindness and generosity can have a ripple effect, making a significant impact in people's lives.
